![]() ![]() The townspeople feared a curse and fled as soon as the weather broke. In 1786, her accusers, along with half the town's children, vanished. It is assumed that she died from exposure to the cold and disease. She was convicted and banished to the woods, in the dead of winter. It is still a mystery as to why she needed their blood. The children said that she lured them to her home and drew blood from them. 150 years after this settlement came about in 1785, several children in the township accused the Irish-born woman of witchcraft, which was a serious accusation in those days. The pieces of this town's mysteries date back as far as the Revolutionary War between the US and England. ![]() The fort was named after Blair and became the highly ill-fated town of Blair, Maryland, in 1634. They were helping to defend Lord Calvert's colony to the east against hostile Indian tribes. The native Indians sabotaged the expedition, but despite the setback, Blair and his crew settled at a fort there. No native tribal Indians would venture into the area, called The Black Hills Forest. In the 1630s, Colonel Blair of England went to a local tribesman and asked him to help them on an expedition to the area. Before the town of Burkittsville came about, the settlement was called Blair. The legend arose in February 1785 in a settlement in Maryland. ![]()
